ENRICHING YOUR SAFARI: Part 2 – Beading with the Maasai

You’ve likely seen striking images of Maasai people adorned in bold, colorful jewellery — vivid reds, blues, and intricate patterns that instantly catch the eye. These designs are a hallmark of traditional Maasai craftsmanship, created by women of the tribe in northern Tanzania. The tradition dates back well before the 19th century, when international trade introduced glass beads to the region. Prior to that, Maasai jewellery was made using natural materials such as clay, wood, copper, bone, and brass. The introduction of brightly colored glass beads transformed their work, and the Maasai quickly adopted the new medium, giving rise to the vibrant beadwork we recognize today.

The Maasai are among the most well-known ethnic groups in East Africa — admired both for their proud preservation of traditional customs and for their graceful adaptation to aspects of modern life. What fascinates many visitors is how seamlessly they maintain their cultural identity in an ever-changing world.

Whether living in remote pastoral villages or modern urban areas, the Maasai proudly wear their traditional dress and distinctive jewellery. It is a living tradition, not a relic of the past, and a powerful symbol of cultural resilience and artistic expression. (Check out our African Splendour Tour for an example itinerary which features interactions with the Maasai people.)

Sidai Designs in Arusha

Sidai Designs is a local organization based in Arusha town that began with five Maasai artisans and has since grown into a community of over 100, creating handmade contemporary jewellery and homewares in the standard Maasai style. Through their local charitable arm, they empower Maasai women through income generation, community development, knowledge and education. This encourages sustainable livelihoods, giving women financial independence while preserving Maasai culture and showcasing it to the world.

Your Personal Beading Workshop with the Maasai in Tanzania

Sidai Designs invites you to take part in a two-hour traditional Maasai beading class set in their peaceful garden surroundings. Your experience begins with a guided tour of the workshop, where you’ll see firsthand how many of the brand’s distinctive designs are created. This behind-the-scenes look offers inspiration for the next part of your visit: crafting your own beautiful piece of Maasai-inspired jewellery — a personal and meaningful souvenir of your time in Tanzania.

Guided by skilled Maasai artisans, you’ll learn not only the techniques of this intricate craft but also the cultural significance behind the colors, patterns, and materials used. The beading process is rich with symbolism, reflecting stories of identity, status, and tradition within Maasai society. As you work, you’ll have the chance to engage with the beadworkers and gain a deeper understanding of their way of life, making this far more than just a craft class.
