Ban Plastic Bags

Tanzania Bans Plastic Bags: Tanzania has become a leader amongst the global movement to reduce plastic waste in our environment. Effective June 1, 2019, the Government of Tanzania banned all plastic carrier bags from being brought into or used within the country. The ban applies to Tanzanian residents and visitors alike, and is inclusive of the ever-popular Ziploc bags you may prefer to use for separating your clothing and preventing them from getting wet.

There are a few exceptions to the rule, with the following still permitted:

  • The 100 mL / quart-size bag required by airlines for carry-on liquids, as these are expected to remain in your possession throughout your trip and depart with you.
  • Plastic packaging for medical services or devices
  • Plastic packaging for food items

We ask that you please observe this rule and abstain from packing plastic bags in your carry-on or checked luggage. Doing so may result in delays upon arrival.

What can I use instead?

There are some great alternatives you may use in your packing to avoid bringing plastic bags. See below for some of our recommendations.
